Tahuya, WA

Tahuya’s roots stretch back to the mid-1800s when settlers began establishing homesteads amid the dense forests along Hood Canal. The earliest known settler, Enoch Willey, claimed land here in 1865, later selling it in 1875 before relocating. In the years that followed, other pioneers arrived, including Rodney White, who settled here in 1890. White quickly became a respected figure, known for his kindness, hard work, and ingenuity. He built a log cabin, barn, and root cellar, and constructed the first road linking Tahuya to Dewatto using a handmade sled pulled by his team of oxen and burros. Today, with approximately 1,500 residents, Tahuya maintains its quiet, rural atmosphere and deep connection to its pioneering past.

Located on the Kitsap Peninsula along the Hood Canal, the natural environment significantly enriches life in Tahuya. Wildlife sightings are common, from bald eagles soaring overhead to deer, black bears, and occasional orcas and seals visible along the waterfront. Inland forests shelter a variety of birds, elk, and smaller mammals, emphasizing the biodiversity and ecological importance of the region.
